ESA vs PSD
The difference between an ESA and PSD lies in how they provide support to their owners. A PSD does require some training. However, this training can be done by the owner and there are lots of great training resources available online.
Emotional Support Animals (ESAs)
These are a type of assistance animal that provide comfort and emotional support to their owners mitigating symptoms of diagnosed mental and/or emotional disabilities such as stress, depression, anxiety, phobias, and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), and other mental health disabilities. Assistance animals are typically prescribed by a licensed mental health professional(LMHP) as part of an individual’s treatment plan. The prescription takes the form of an official document called an Emotional Support Animal letter, also known as an ESA Prescription Letter.
An ESA Prescription Letter confirms that an individual has a legitimate need due to functional limitations for the support that their companion animal provides and entitles them to certain rights under federal law.

Who qualifies?
Individuals who qualify for an ESA are provided certain accommodations under federal law in the area of housing. The Fair Housing Act includes ESAs in its definition of assistance and/or companion animal. Under this act, people cannot be discriminated against due to a “mental health disability” when obtaining housing. To be eligible for an Emotional support animal (ESA) the ADA defines a mental health illness/disability as: “any mental or psychological disorder” such as, “emotional or mental health illness, and specific learning disabilities”. Their animals/pets are usually (cats/dogs) which provide a therapeutic benefit to their owners. They are “not required” to go through any specific training. An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is primarily for “housing accommodation” purposes.
